Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
